Taliesin Table

Design Development II | 2021

As an exercise in creating a piece to complement an existing design, the Taliesin table was designed to go alongside Frank Lloyd Wright's "Origami Chair" from his Arizona home and studio, Taliesin West. Like most of his furniture, the chair's design reflected not only that of the building it was to be placed in, but the natural landscape that surrounded. In this case that meant a focus on the broad planes, warm hues, and natural texture of the Sonoran Desert. The design was meant to be built on-site by the same carpenters constructing the building, in this case Taliesin’s team of apprentices. Thus, its construction is simple, using just one sheet of plywood.

The table is constructed of the same cherry plywood as the chair that inspires it, with a cast concrete top that echoes the raw materiality of Taliesin's walls.
