The ubiquitous white plastic Monobloc chair has become a symbol in our society of cheap, disposable products which we purchase, use, and discard with very little thought given to their lifecycle before and after our personal interaction with them. Their production halfway across the world and journey to our big box store shelves, and the eternity they will spend underground in a landfill when we’re done with them are intentionally removed from our consciousness in favor of their rock bottom price point.
Each of the pieces in the collection are made from multiple discarded Monobloc chairs, compression molded into sturdier, visually heftier pieces of furniture. The vestigial forms of the familiar plastic chairs are still discernible in the final product, though warped and deformed into the bird’s nest-like structure of the pieces. While the pieces can be serially produced from the same mold, each one is unique in its structure due to the nature of the production method.
A proof-of-concept piece was made from a children's chair in my home oven, which I consider a resounding endorsement of the concept's feasability.
